Eh up all
My new(ish) PC is lovely but the loud hard rive is annoying me. I'm looking to get a new quiet one and have found a super quiet 320 gig Western Digital for very few pennies. For that price, I could buy two and RAID them together. But, the question is - how? I'm looking for performance rather than security so do I want RAID 0? Is it worth doing, or should I just shove them both in seperately as two drives?

Another plan is to get a smallish raptor for installing Windows, games etc and keep a nice quiet storage one on the side for music, films etc.
At the mo I've got a 250 gig Seagate (loud) and an old 120 gig. I could either get a 2 x 320 gig Western Digitals that run nice and quiet and RAID them or get a quick Raptor and maybe get one quiet one for the same sorta price.

I ran raid 0 for a few years with some 5600rpm drives, they were very quiet and a fair bit quicker that a single drive but when one of them went, i lost the lot, at least if a normal drive goes you have various tools and a chance to get the data off it.
I've never bothered since even though all my pc's have on board raid.

Wouldn't get a raptor for quiet tbh cos they are so blatantly NOT
I'm running 2 of the old 8mb cache 36Gb variants in Raid 0 atm and their rather loud. The newer ones are abit quieter but still not quiet.
I'd suggest a good read of this site m8e : <a href="http://www.silentpcreview.com/" target="_blank">http://www.silentpcreview.com/</a>
They make good recommendations for silent gear and how loud stuff sounds.
For performance of storage I'd suggest a read of: <a href="http://www.storagereview.com/" target="_blank">http://www.storagereview.com/</a>
Should give you the best info about hard drive storage.
