I've registered myself a domain name.
I now want to set up a simple forum for local community discussion.
Anyone point me to a simple idiots guide to setting up and running such a beasty?
It needs to be really simple, so that even I can understand it.
Where to host? Linux vs Windoze? Forum software? Rules? Password Protecion?
Anything that you lot have learned over the years. I've just been drooling in the corner as a user. It's time I became an admin (in my own little sandpit to learn).

Although I'm managing to keep our forum going I am by no means an expert, but will try to help in any way I canSlatz wrote: I've registered myself a domain name.
Where to host?
We've just moved to http://www.csnewmedia.co.uk/ and they seem ok for what we need.
How busy do you expect your forum to be?
Linux vs Windoze?
We are hosted on a linux server but I dont think it makes a great deal of difference
Forum software?
Depends on whether you intend to buy it or just want a free one
Apparantly a good easy to use free one is http://www.phpbb.com/
And HERE is a guide on how to set it up.
I'm sure there are other guides if you search
Rules? Password Protecion?
These things will be set during the installation of your forum

Low volume of traffic expected, costs to be minimum as it is just a personal project and I'm funding the lot. I'll have a look at phbb. I've also had a look at http://www.simplemachines.org/ which is used on another forum I frequent.
