well finally took the ******ed ram out of my laptop (my only pc atm thats why no games :( ) which meant i could finally install linux .being a linux noob im having fun but by gawd its hard to install a nivida driver. still not managed it as i dont know how i can get to yast to sart doing what it asks :)

Code: Select all

NOTE: The nvidia installer does not work as long as a Xserver is still
running and the nvidia kernel module is still loaded. Therefore
please boot into runlevel 3 by specifying "3" as kernel boot
option or switch to runlevel 3 ("init 3") and unload the kernel
module ("rmmod nvidia") before running the nvidia installer.

It is recommended to use YaST for installation of the NVIDIA
driver. There are several reasons for this. First, it's
simple. Second, and this is the most important one, you won't need to
recompile the nvidia kernel module after a kernel update.

Update your Kernel via YOU (YaST Online Update). Use

YaST -> Software -> Installation Source -> Add

  Protocol: HTTP
  Server Name: : download.nvidia.com
  Directory on Server: /opensuse/10.2

to add the NVIDIA ftp server as additional installation source.
Now use

YaST -> Software -> Software Management

to install the NVIDIA driver. Select the following packages:

  x11-video-nvidia
  nvidia-gfx-kmp-"kernel-flavor"

"kernel-flavor" depends on your installed kernel. Check with
"uname -r" for installed default/bigsmp kernel. Use "sax2 -r"
for X.Org configuration.
christ im lost :)

It is great fun working all this out. I had a good friend run through this with me and I will try my best to help you out.

Bash is Borne Again SHell or a terminal session. you should have a icon somewhere in your program*Start* menu. Type su and hit return you will be asked for a password *this should be your root password* and you will have a root/admin session open once you have this type init3 or init 3 I can't rememebr if there is a space or not and I don't have a linux box here at work.

If I remember correctly you download the drivers to a folder that you will remember or write down. drop into run level 3 as above. Yes it is a like DOS but far better. become the folder that you put the drivers in. By typing: something like CD /home/drivers/downloads/NVIDIA/ and hit return. *I just made up the file path*

then type: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run

The setup will run you through the rest.

Try this and tell me if it helps

but yer if we could get together and talk me thru it i would be eternally greatful :) as it stands i dont even know how to d/l somin and run it. there aint no double click on an .exe in this game is there :) so yer im a complete nub who only knows how to switch it on and close it down . everrything else seems... well.... hard.

ok first things first lets make sure you have all the bits you need installed. For some reason, suse doesn't install lots of useful stuff like the compiler and some build tools by default.

Fire up YAST and select Software Management. Near the upper left hand corner is a drop down box which defaults (I think) the Pattern. Change that to Search.

Then search for gcc and ensure that the gcc and g++ packages are selected.

Then search for kernel and make sure the kernel-source package is selected.

Then search for make (I'm pretty sure this will already be installed but if not select it )

Then click next and it will install all this stuff for you. It will ask you to put the DVD in at this point if you haven't set up online installation repositories.

Once that is done go to nvidia's website and download the linux drivers. Make sure yo upull down the the correct architecture version for whatever you have installed (x86 or x86_64). This will be in the form of a shell script called NVIDIA-{version}.run

Save this file to the local hard drive.

Fire up a terminal session (best way is to hit CTRL-ALT-F1) and login as root.

Once logged in type init 3 (this is required to shutdown the X Window System). Once down run the shell script by typing sh NVIDIA{version}.run Top tip - just type the first few letters of the file (in uuper case!) and press tab for auto completion.

Then follow the onscreen prompts. When asked if you want to update your X configurartion file say yes.

When it exits type init 5 to go back to GUI mode and see if it has worked.

Let me know if you have any problems.
