It has been quite a few years since I have done any programming... in fact very much gone are my days of Cobol, Assembler, and BASIC.

So, I want to get stuck into a language again and have been told that C++ is just about the most practical and global language out there at the mo. Added to this is my interest in getting deeper into Linux - which I've heard C++ is best suited to.

If you do any programing, what do you use? What would you recommend? :)

I started with Pascal basics, then moved onto C, then C++.

Thanks Bob, I dropped this question also into a Developers forum and was told that C++ is an industry standard. So I also did a search in Google with the phrase "written in C++" and found this link:

<a href="http://www.research.att.com/~bs/applications.html" target="_blank">C++ Applications</a>

Doesn't seem to have any limitations really. :)

It's a quick hop from C++ to Java etc as well.

Java is slower & simpler than C++, but very similar.

What about C#? .net inclusive, does everything we need with the new Visual Studio.

My thinking is that if I get my head around C++ then app's of its kind would be relatively easy to pick up. In addition to this I find .Net to be a bit bloaty and would also make me Windows dependant.

Correct me if I'm wrong but C++ would be much friendlier cross-platform and if necessary for porting. It might look like I'm thinking a bit big considering that I am just starting out in the language - but I just like to think longterm.

Does this make sense? :unsure:

Depends what you want to do really, Ive done c/c++ over the past 2 years at uni which is a good and powerful language once you get into it etc.

But for windows programming its probably just as good and easy to use VB6 or VB.net
