How many Linux gurus do we have here? What are you using it for?

I've played with several versions before, even started a course to achieve some corporate recognition before my wife became ill which meant dropping out... I would like to avoid Vista... I'm after a new career direction and Linux seems to be the way...

So again... how are you using it?

Probably the best person to speak with if you want to make it a career thing would be Gas as I know he uses it for work, and for nearly all his home computing stuff

I use linux at home mainly as a surfing/downloading box. As for me knowing enough of it to have a career NO WAY I am still quite a N00b with it.

Just dropping Ubuntu on an old lappy... I'm being really radical lately... just doing things kinda spontaneously... and so is the lappy... <_<

Gonna try it on my wife's PC me thinks... :whis:

oof! how did I miss this?? :)

If you want to make a career of it then you have to go the server route. Red Hat or SUSE.

We use loads of Linux servers at work - all SUSE. I use openSUSE on my desktop at work.

To start off with, do as you are doing and get a copy installed to play around with, ideally two versions so you can get used to the networking. Then get into Apache, PHP, MySQL, (from a installing and configuring point of view - not really programming).

Try to get in to using the command line as much as possible and have a look at shell scripting.

THat should keep you going for a while! ;)

Suse? Really? I thought Linux muscle was in the likes of Ubuntu these days... hmmm... I've got a outa da box Suse 9.1 here that I picked through college some years ago. Is it worth updating via updates or should I just go for openSuse?

Really good to have yer back Gas. :)

SUSE Enteprise Server to be specific. Don't bother with 9.1. Just download openSUSE.

Ubuntu is good for desktop but not a lot of companies use it as server. You can use openSUSE as server too if you like. Probbaly a good idea to set up a home server with DNS, DHCP, Postfix, Apache, PHP, MySQL etc and play around with it.

Career wise, at the moment, it's all Linux server with a tiny amount of desktop.

Whats wrong with Windows that installs out of the box, has driver support, is compatible with just about every piece of hardware on the market and doesnt require you to compile kernals and fart about with command lines!

Not to mention the ability to use programs and games off the net / shop shelves / everywhere in existence as opposed to having to run a windows emulator just to get wordpad to open!

Honestly...... linux...... pfffffft
