Ok, so I've been looking at whats available and have come up with the following spec.

Initially I was set on going AMD as all previous builds have been AMD but I've also looked at an Intel setup.

AMD

<a href="http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInf ... oupID=1534" target="_blank">AMD AM2 Athlon 64 Dual Core 4600 Retail Box inc Fan, Socket AM2, 940 PIN</a>

<a href="http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInf ... oupID=1088" target="_blank">Abit KN9 Ultra</a>

<a href="http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInf ... oupID=1654" target="_blank">Geil® Ultra DDR2 2.0GB PC6400 Dual Channel Kit (2 x 1GB) 800MHz (4-4-4-12) with Aluminium heat spreader</a>

Cost of that kit = £408.61

INTEL

<a href="http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInf ... oupID=1674" target="_blank">Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz</a>

<a href="http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInf ... oupID=1093" target="_blank">Gigabyte GA-8I965P-DS3 SKT 775 P965 Chipset</a>

<a href="http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInf ... oupID=1654" target="_blank">Geil® Ultra DDR2 2.0GB PC6400 Dual Channel Kit (2 x 1GB) 800MHz (4-4-4-12) with Aluminium heat spreader</a>

Cost of that kit = £470.46

Not decided on a Graphics card yet but what do you think of the 2 set-ups and which do you think is best and why?

Would you change anything?

If your buying that ram, id go for the E6300 and overclock it m8, especially with that motherboard...

What gfx card you going to stick in it??

oh and by the way, C2D setup all the way!!

Between them 2 rigs I'd go for the Intel one, if your buying now and wanna go Dual Core then the Intel chips are the only way to go as they piss all over the AMD Dual Core's

I would be surprised if microdirect get that ram back in at that price!

How about this if you really want to stick to the E6600

tbh even the CD6300 will be faster than what you have so I'd make sure you get a decent board and ram and then just get the 6300 and then get something faster as and when you need it...

Well I took the plunge :) :)

Last night I ordered most of the bits from Scan, most of them were in the "Today Only" list which were the best prices I could find them at.

This morning Micro Direct got the Geil Ram back in at the same price as the link I posted before so I ordered it straight away.

Then later in the day it had gone up by a few pounds and was now on "Special"

So this is what I went for

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz , Today Only at Scan = £174.99+vat

Gigabyte GA-8I965P-DS3 SKT 775 P965 Chipset, Today Only at Scan = £76.50+vat

MSI GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail, Today Only at Scan = £156.99+vat

Geil® Ultra DDR2 2.0GB PC6400 Dual Channel Kit (2 x 1GB) 800MHz (4-4-4-12) with Aluminium heat spreader, Back in stock at same price at Micro Direct = £141.80+vat

Got a few other bits also, including a new case and PSU

<a href="http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=452013" target="_blank">Aspire X-Discovery Black Midi Tower with Window w/o PSU</a> £51.00+vat

<a href="http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=228615" target="_blank">580W HiperPower Type-R Modular Blue PSU Quiet Dbl Fan aPFC ATX2.2 20/24 Pin (RoHS)</a> £54.89+vat

<a href="http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=356212" target="_blank">Pioneer DVR-111DBK Black 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer DVD Writer </a> "Today Only" price was £17.25+vat

<a href="http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=467393" target="_blank"> 250 Gb Western Digital WD2500YS Caviar RE, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.7 ms </a> "Today Only" price was £44.95+vat

Hope it was all ACTUALLY in stock. The number of times I've ordered summit for it to go out of stock by the time it should have been sent out.
