Awww crap, now it loks like the GPU is boogered, strange lines over the screen, game breaking up with audio slowdown then lock.

I remember Eagle having issues with his 8800gt, what did you have to do Eagle?

More than one thing going in quick succession like this would normal point at another underlying issue.

Hmm, could be, my psu is a couple a yrs old. Might try that hdd again here at work before rma. Could have been a dodgy sata cable. I only tried it with the same cable.

My 8800gt is the Evga SSC edition which is factory overclocked.

However i began to get stability issues and found that slightly underclocking it solved my problem

Its still overclocked from standard but slightly under the setting for that model.

To achieve this I use Rivatuner.

I have installed the extra nvidia tools. My fan was set at 30%. Set iot to 65% now and its spinning faster but still quiet. Will give it a go tonight.

Rivatuner also allows the fan to spin faster as is required.

So it ramps up when it gets a bit hot and then calms down again when its not needed.

The onboard software is supposed to do that but its never been as good as using Rivatuner

Well I set the fan speed to 65 and it locked within 30 secs. Reboot and set to 100%, same vertical lines within 30 secs and lock solid.

My borked wd black 1tb drive seems to be ok now, had to use install dvd to format it then redid it from inside windows, all tests 100% fine.

I whipped my ati card out of my media centre and am using it now.

Not sure what to do next.

Which OS are you using?

Ambient room temperatures can knock a system over the edge like this - and some MS updates have been causing some systems to throw a wobbler.

This may be a daft question, but are the drivers for your kit manufacturer or MS? (Motherboard chipsets, etc.)

BIOS up to date?
