So I travel down to Edinburgh on the last day of induction for accomodation, my Dad kindly driving me down, using the maps that the Uni supply, only to find out that the map doesn't show have the streets and if a street changes name half way down that the map doesn't show this. We found the campus with very little hassle thankfully, and got inducted "with no delay" then found the Dorms with no real help from the maps. Everything was working out nicley.
Until the next day! Student Loan Company advised that I would get my first Student loan on the 29th Sep. Did I get the loan, no and because I thought that I would I took very little money with me as I had spend the rest of my holiday money on Food and things that I would need. I found out that I would get the loan after I had enrolled. Two days later I did get it.
My Dorm is nice and in a good area which is really central, about 5 mins from Princes street. I stay with 3 other guys, One from France, One from Greece and one from Spain. They are nice guys and a good laugh, Who also sorted out the internet connection in the Flat/Dorm, But get this, you can only get it from one company and you are ameant to have a connection for each room at £200 for the year that we will be there. So we bought a W/less router and paid £50 ecah for an unlimted 4mb connection, not bad for a year. Or it would be if we got 4 mb or even if it worked half the time. Every so often you get prompted for the username and password and then it refuses it. So I have had to run the 30 mins walk to my campus a few morning so that I fleetsave.
I got one of the Acer Aspire Ones but the higher end one with Linpus Linux installed thinking that I could use it for Lectures and general surfing. I have never seen a worst O/S, when you get the Aspire One you are greeted by a very horrible, Tailored GUI which you can change by going into the konsole and tpying a few lines of code to get it looking like a normal Desktop. But trying to install any more apps is impossible I read through the forums and tried all thier tricks but nothing worked. |I had a look round to find out how to install a different O/S from a USB Stick but ended up buying a USB DVD R/W Drive and installing Xp which is working fine. The Laptop is a good bit of kit and great for Uni and general surfing and is so light weight that it's not a hassle to carry round all day using on the bus/train. I would recommend it to others that need a laptop for school/College/Uni/work as it is very capable.
I will leave this for now as I do have work to be getting on with.
