Hi I have a Netgear Wireless-G Cable Router WGR614 to set up in my house. I want to replace my hardwired cable router. I'll be using Windows XP SP2 and a laptop on Vista 32 home.

I will connect 2 PC's via hardwire and I wish to connect a Laptop (built in wireless). I also have the Netgear USB dongle if I need it.

I also want to allow my new phone Nokia N82 connect via WiFi as well.

I'm reading a few sites now to try and get my head around the security side of it.

I've never set up a wireless router before what do I do to make it fairly secure?

The instructions in the box just tell you how to set the router up nothing else. Maybe more info is on the cd's

I think I need to change the standard username and password from the default Netgear ones.

Do I need to setup a Windows Logon and pass on all my computers?

Do I manually set up the allowed Mac Addys? I.E. 2 hardwired Pc's & Laptop, in the netgear software. How will this affect my Nokia N82.

Do I dissable DCHP and configure an IP address for my router, laptop and 2 PC's? I pressume I turn of DCHP on all computers and not just my PC, main one.

Any info appreciated

I would just set up the SSID* and then WEP or WPA can't remember which one best. The Hardwired PC's would care either way just you Phone and lappy. Once you have it turned on the router that is scan for it from the lappy and try to connect then enter your password thingie.

usually you have a login for your router

i think it would be http://routerlogin.net

default username = admin
then password

once logged in change the usename to whatever you want and create a fancy password

I use WPA-PSK as the security level

All settings should be in there for you to mess with

Do everything....why not?

i.e. Use the security to its maximum AND limit connections to the MACs of the equipement you have....takes a matter of minutes to set-up. Also, once set-up hide any broadcast.

All is not well. I think I have a faulty router. Got my main PC hardwired and working. Setup PS3 (new addition to the Hammer household) and Laptop running vista via wireless.
I then spent hours trying to setup my mobile via Wifi, Nokia N82. Seems as though it wouldn't accept the pass key. I've set the router up for WPA + WPA2 security. Anyway the boy said the PS3 wouldn't go online so I checked the laptop and that wouldn't connect either.
Then spent ages checking all settings even trying without security still the same fault. I think the router is transmitting a signal but now not receiving one.

I will take the router back today and get it checked or exchanged. I only unpacked it yesterday.
