I've got a yamaha surround cinema amp thingy <a href="http://www.soundandvisiononline.com/mor ... t_id=10749" target="_blank">http://www.soundandvisiononline.com/mor ... d=10749</a>

It's apparently got a 'Sub woofer pre-amp' connection on it which is like a black slightly larger than phono jack socket on the back.

Anyone got any suggestions what type of subwoofer i need? or at least what connection it needs to have, can it be active or passive? i'm a total n00b with hi-fi stuff.

Cheers.

How's this one?
I already have a set of floor standing eltax speakers and i'm very happy with them.

My Sub Woofer is connected with a single phone lead from my Yamaha Amp. It's an active SW.

As to what one to get, like anything else you pays ya money.....

I don't pretend to be up to date on all this as I replaced my stuff over a year ago. I would guess that with a £160 amp you ought to be looking at £100-£150 on a SW? Depends upon the quality of your other speakers.

Mine is this one

I have that one connected to my Sony home cinema amp.

Improved the quality over the Sony one a treat.
Bought mine new from Richersounds if you want to compare it with new prices

That looks like the sort of thing i'm after although it's going to be eBay for me i think, i cant afford to be spending that sort of money.

My current speaker set is a pair of eltax that were reduced from £150 to £30 for the pair, from Richer sounds too! that's my sort of money :D

There's a store at the end of my road at work, i may pop in at lunch time.

Looks like that's the same connection i have clingy, strange that most amps dont advertise their connection or is this the standard?
It seems subs that can have other speakers connected to them often have a different connection to the amp.
