Thought it was amusing the way Microsoft are talking about ditching Internet Explorer. They make out that it was their invention.
We likely all remember Bill Gates opinion of the Internet all those years ago, basically saying that it was going to fizzle out. Well, when the 'net took its grip on the imaginations of those with imagination MS realised that they were being left behind with absolutely no strategy for for getting a cut of this massive pie of business and technology.
What did MS do? Develop their own 'net technology to catch up? Nope, they bought a browser called Spry Mosaic, anyone remember that browser? For as high as version 10 of Internet Explorer in the 'About' window Spry Mosaic were given a small mention for their credit for IE's origins.
They gave MS some credibility on the 'net as MS bought their way through other avenues to 'net domination. If MS are to be noted in Internet history it should be limited to their spending power to buy other people's developments, or push out innovations better than their own, rather than anything intuitive to their technological prowess.

Show me one single company that has done everything off of their own back and hasn't bought a company for patents or to take over their ideas.

Doesn't make it right, and someone knowing exactly what really happened will always be happy to correct someone trying to rewrite history.
There are loads of home-grown businesses out there.
