Decided to give fixed gear a go (a single gear and no freewheel so you have to pedal constantly) Dragged an old Benotto from the 80's out of the back of the garage and did a quick and dirty conversion Never ridden fixed so I might be in for an interesting first 100 km .

Re: Fixed gear
I wouldnt go that far, when I used to work in the bikeshop tho one of the regulars let me ride his up and down the road next to the shop, oh no, certainly not for me lol
Re: Fixed gear
It's definitely a different experience , not helped by living on top of a bloody big hill the plan is to start off with a flattish circuit to get used to the constant peddling then try some of the local hills .

Re: Fixed gear
Historically you rode Fixed to build base fitness ready for the summer , you have no lower gears to fall back to on the hills and you have to pedal all the time come what may on the descents ,this teaches you to develop what the French call Souplesse basically a good pedal action that doesn't fight the pedals it's also one of the reasons I have rollers as well as the Turbo trainer That said I have to admit to finding it hard going on the road especially approaching roundabouts and junctions and don't ask about pedalling whilst braking

How are your knees taking the strain?
Just be a nutter... life becomes much more exciting, and people won't expect anything more of you...
Re: Fixed gear
Fine so far , though I'm staying clear of the local 20% hills in all honesty
