With regards to XP64, its easier to install on a branded pc, stuck it on my other halfs bargain dell i got her, works a treat, only had to update the sound drivers.
With regards to the upgrade, depends on your budget, im currently in the process of getting a new pc for the other halfs dad, he does a lot of photoshop stuff, total cost delivered minus windows is £530, but this seems to be a good spec gaming machine for £599
