Gonna have a go at SP1 next week. Waiting for a new e-sata lead in the post. I want a full image before I cock it up.

If it happens the first time, there is every possibility it can happen again. If it goes belly-up then at least try the fix, and if that doesn't work drop your image back on.

The fix below suggests using Notepad, but as I dual boot with Ubuntu I used that instead which was a lot easier to use than Notepad when looking for the rogue lines.

The fix:

01. Reboot your computer while it's starting up.

02. When your computer starts up again, choose the option "Launch Startup Repair"
--> PIC: <a href="http://notebooks.com/wp-content/uploads ... ecov-1.jpg" target="_blank">http://notebooks.com/wp-content/uploads ... v-1.jpg</a>

03. When the Startup repair starts, click cancel.

04. After you click cancel it will show a box. Click "Don't Send"
--> PIC: <a href="http://i52.tinypic.com/xgjriw.png" target="_blank">http://i52.tinypic.com/xgjriw.png</a>

05. Click the link "View advanced options for recovery and support"

06. In the new window click Command Prompt at the bottom.
--> PIC: <a href="http://i51.tinypic.com/50imu8.png" target="_blank">http://i51.tinypic.com/50imu8.png</a>

07. In Command Prompt type this and press enter: %windir%\system32\notepad.exe

08. Notepad will open. In notepad go to File-->Open.

09. Change the type of files notepad views from .txt to All Files (see pic)
--> PIC: <a href="http://i51.tinypic.com/35nd74z.png" target="_blank">http://i51.tinypic.com/35nd74z.png</a>

10. Now in Notepad, go to C:\Windows\winsxs\ (or whichever drive Windows is installed on)

11. In that folder, find pending.xml and make a copy of it

12. Now open the original pending.xml (it will load really slow because the file is huge)

13. Press CNTRL+F and search for the following exactly: 0000000000000000.cdf-ms

14. Delete the following text (yours will be a little different):
<Checkpoint/>
<DeleteFile path="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_0000000000000000.cdf-ms"/>
<MoveFile source="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\e56db1db48d4cb0199440000b01de419._0000000000000000.cdf-ms" destination="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_0000000000000000.cdf-ms"/>

--> PIC: <a href="http://i54.tinypic.com/adzpzp.png" target="_blank">http://i54.tinypic.com/adzpzp.png</a>

Your PC might not have all 3 sections of code (<Checkpoint>, <DeleteFile>, <MoveFile>). Just make sure you delete section "Checkpoint" and whatever other sections have "000000000000000.cdf-ms". They will be right next to eachother.

15. Save the file, close notepad, close command prompt, restart your computer.

Once your computer starts up, do a normal startup (it may stall for 5-10 minutes at the "starting windows" screen, but leave it going) and the Service Pack will install some more stuff and restart a few times and then everything should be working!

The two that aren't up to playing much more than card games tbh, ones the missus and if I installed a game on that she'd kill me and the others the TV machine with Intel G35 grafics ;)

My other machine I'm just installing Gentoo and the main machine, well I've been given orders by the missus to get it built this weekend and that I better take up gaming again to get me out of her hair :P So I've got my orders :lol:

To be honest work is so crap atm that I've lost interest for life, let alone gaming etc, it's got really depressingly busy all the time and people just think that we can keep jogging along and stay on top of things. Getting to the point where they're talking to me about a £10k pay rise and I just didn't care because the money isn't compensation for a shit life ;)

Been seriously considering a complete change tbh, to the point of thinking about emigrating to Canada, but not sure the missus is so keen as she would like children etc.

:lol: nah she just wants to be able to have them closer to her mum, not that she's that close tbh as she's in stockton-on-tees and we're in Bucks, 4 hours up there, but better than a few hour flight I suppose.

Trying to convince her that moving before children would be better as it's just less complicated and children won't mind growing up whereever tbh ;)

Around the same time MS released an update for the latest Windows Samsung phones to prep them for W7 update, it bricked approx 10% of them.

1. Try a hard reset
2. Return the phone to the manufacturer
