Its free and hides all the crud on your desktop

Where does it put them all?

I only have 2 icons on my desktop anyways but I know a few people that dont like to use the startbar they just have everythin on the desktop...

It hides them, just double click on the desktop and they appear. There is a video demo on the link Nelly posted. Cool bit of software, working on Win 7

Right click desktop > Arrange Icons By... > Toggle: Show Desktop Icons.

Well there's an extra service I don't need to have running in the background...

I have no icons on my desptop. Just dont see the point. If you have too many you may as well just use the menu. If you only have a few then use the quickstart tool bar.

The amount of desktops I see here covered with documents. This is usually mirrored in their general working area and physical desktop which is usually a mess.

Its always the same on presentations where the person fires up a powerpoint from a desktop with 15 by 22 icons all over the shop.... probably the same people moan when they lose them due to the folder not sync'ing.....
