Well I tried them on tonight , Their going to need a little bit of cut and shut to get them just how I want them but they sound great , Quieter than the cored cans I had previously but a little louder than the cans I have on at the moment . The main thing is the difference in sound , The cans have rather a harsh bark to them whilst the megaphones have a nice bass rumble thats more pleasing on the ear . I'll try and upload a sound file this weekend .

Slightly OT but on the same sort of theme: Do you wear ear plugs when riding ?

i didnt then i went on a long haul ie. Jases LAN. 11Hr's on a wee 400 and a noisey ARIA helmet. On the way back i managed to get some off of a trucker and by gawd did i start to enjoy them :) wind noise in that helemet at 120mph was not quiet :( so i have plugs in my jacket at all times now. Mind you i have no bike so i guess theres a problem there some where :)

Always use ear plugs , I have some silicon ones that allow me to hear conversations but block out louder noises . As Class says , wind noise is a pain :bk:

Yea I think I might start using them tbh, ok for short journeys but anything more than 20 mins and its a bit of a pain. It'll be even worse when I get something with more pace. Got loads of plugs in my car courtesy of work ;)

I need a new bike before i think about ear plugs, my bike is pretty silent at all times. . . . .
Piece of Shi*!!!!!

Have narrowed the problem down to 'something carb side', so far my troubleshooting has taken me through:

Head off
new plug
head gasket
barrel off
barrel gasket
small end bearing changed (as told by 'specialist', it's your little end bearing mate)
piston rings checked, plenty of life left
bore checked, very little wear, no scoring
gudgeon pin checked, very little wear
points checked, look brand new, gave them a clean.
choke checked, is still sticking . . . . not sure

Still to check:

Coil
CDI??? (or equivelant capacitor type jobby)
take carb apart
check fuel flow . . . fuel filter missing.

Getting to the end of my teather.
Sorry to derail your thread screwball :) Nice cans!

Hippy I'm sorry to say it but WTF do you expect ? you gets what ye's pay for, and if you wanted a little more reliability (as it was this that was the reason for getting the bike - ie the fact your car is as unreliable!) why didn't you buy something a little younger ?

You'll end up spending nearly what andrew paid for his little bike

So far i've spent £11, 2 gaskets and an end bearing.
Didn't even pay for the mechanic to look over it.

I reallise it's a dog, hence i want to fix it so i can sell it for what i paid for it.

Old bikes and cars aren't all unreliable.

Just got to weld them up where I've cut and shut them , Hopefully this weekend .

Hippy what are the bikes symptoms again ? though I have to say it sounds like the carb , You say the bike has points ? If so it will not have CDI ignition . Whats the bike like for starting ?

Starts fine, idles fine, just no power at the top end.

Put a thread about it on visordown. Had a few people suggest the coil now, so that will be my next thing.

Yep, i am stubborn, it's a simple bike, there's not much to go wrong, which is what makes it so frustrating!

Have you had the ignition timing checked ? Also You mentioned things improved when the baffle was cleaned so have you checked the oil pump settings and cleaned out the whole silencer ? Caustic soda is good for this .

looking at the symptoms I'm not so convinced its a carb problem now , Ignition timing could be worth looking at as if it's out it could cause the bike to overheat and the power would drop off as you describe .

Coil ? possibly but I would expect the problem to be intermittent , Try running your hand along the HT lead when the bikes running , If the lead is leaking HT current you will soon know :D

Yeah, don't fancy that :)

Have cleaned the baffle, not with caustic soda, but gave it a blooming good few whacks, there's nothing stuck in there now.

Not checked the oil pump, but there's plenty of oil getting to the carb.

I didn't think it was the coil either, the spark is nice and fat, trouble is, i cant check it while the bike is running.
It revs freely while not under load, but sounds odd, like it's missing, or running with choke or something. That is the sound the mechanic thought was the little end rattling.
I'll hopefully get some time on sunday to look at the ignition, check the timing and test the coil.
