Right

I'm looking to put a PC downstairs in the lounge and my main PC is upstairs in the Spare Room

Don't want to run a cable down to it so wireless is the only real option.

Seen this at PC World and it seems a good deal as most places sell the router for £65 ish and £30 ish for the USB bit

Is this Router any good and is the USB connection any good or would it be better with a PCI Wireless card instead?

Or recommend something else

If you've already got a router, just get a wireless access point and plug it into a port on the router, saves you having to have the fuss of re-setting up your isp account, and it's a lot cheaper. I've got a bog standard belkin one which is great, the only pain is, you have to plug it straight into a pc before you can set it up, it's admin page is not accessible through a router or by wireless, bad for setting up, great for security.

USB cards tend to be a lot more stable than pci cards for some unknown reason, all the cards i've tried drop the connection constantly, but my USB adaptor and even my pcmcia card in my laptop is fine.

avoid netgear, belkin are solid and reliable (generally speaking)

I've got a Netgear WGR614... and bought that to replace a duff Belkin... but if Hippy's experience with Belkin is okay then it was probably down to that unit rather than the brand.

To be honest, I don't think I know anyone who doesn't have a Netgear Router... other than our Hippy now...

Got one at work which was part of the hassle which ended in my forum group name :/

It was however, much better than the d-link one, i think i may have got confused. D-link, not netgear. although netgear network cards are the work of satan himself.

No listings on the website, is this a national promotion? i'd be interested in that!

3Com rate very highly in my book, i still run one of their first generation 10/100 NIC's in my main pc, never had to install specific drivers for it and never had a problem with it, it's been with me nearly 10 years now after i spotted it in my flatmates compaq presario and cunningly swapped it for a d-link one which was a pain :)

Bah, those wireless routers were adsl modem/routers, i'm on cable, so not really suitable :(

Just bought myself a decent belkin wireless router for £39 though.

Eagle, you want my old belkin access point? works fine just connect it to your router (or to the USB port of your main pc).

No thanks m8

I don't have a router already, just the cable modem supplied by NTL

I decided to get the one which I linked to in my original post.

Haven't set it up yet but will let you know how it goes when I do
