OK, so feeling a little bored this afternoon, so thought I'd pull the 6970 apart as it's been running a bit warm, struggling to keep under 85C at load.

As I cleaned it up, I noticed the reason, the heatsink face looks like it was hammered on, not machined flat.

Unfortunately I couldn't get it to reseat properly either, even within arctic silver, so I'm having to get another cooler.

Got one of these on order, anyone had any experience?
Looks like it could be a bit fiddly to fit.

agreed, but prices are top as well....
this ones a reasonable £30

@Madders
That kit only fits ver 1 boards.
Mines a ver2. Hopefully the bits in the kit suppilied with the cooler might fit. Or I might have to engineer something. I've got some old fins here.

Doh, just seen they do a kit for the ver 2 as well....

I'll be ******ed if I can find one in this country though....

Try amazon bob, the ones designed for older cards turn up on there when the new cards come out, that's where my last few are from...

Did think I can butcher the old heatsink and keep the parts that cover the bits I'd need for the enhancement kit.

Tried to solder a shim over the conact area this morning, but the heat sink is so good, I can't get it hot enough without oxy acetylene...... :boff:

Fitted it.

Was fiddley. The enhancement kit would have been easier and I might just buy one still.
Otherwise I used the spare heatsinks and sticky heat pads provided, cut to a suitable size for each of the VRMs.

It now runs at 100% load, stock clocks, at 60C with the fan at an indicated 25%.
So it's helluva cooler and quieter than the stock cooler (though that would have been more effective if it hadn't been dinted).

Not a bad cooler for £32, we'll see how long it lasts.
The only thing I'm not keen on is the heat is not shoved out the case, so it's fine while I've got the sides off, but you have to watch air flow.
