So then, a quick question

used 290X for £350
Used 7990 for £450

Or wait and save up more and cry over £500 for the Asus Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II OC 4096MB

I still need a new PSU and will get a larger case for better cooling

£350 for a 290x isn't a bad price to be fair. If you stick that in a well ventilated case, you will keep the card well within its limits (it is a hot card to begin with in reference form). I would be worried if you wanted to xfire it later on though, which is where something like the ASUS one will come into its own, running cooler.

The 7990 is a tasty card too, but pretty big. I would also look up what games you are looking to play on it as it is a dual GPU card, and not every game is optimised fully in the drivers or the game itself. (skyrim was terrible when I had 2x6970s).

so just a quick update, due to the mining craze, GPU's are now either completely out of stock or have had their price raised by £100-£200 by e-tailors

even Nvidia cards now have gone up £100

High end PSU's have gone up in price and are out of stock, OCUK have lead times of the end of Feb for new stock

The same with large high end cases

So if your not a miner and want to game, you will end up paying a lot more for your hardware and you will have to wait a few months at the earliest for anyone to have any stock :(

I was looking at buying a pair of 290s/x to crossfire but the heat issues were putting me off. The prices of the 7990 fell to £400 and I couldn't knock that back.

I've bought a EK waterblock for the 7990. It's still in it's box as I'm planing on moving from my HAF 932 case to a Phanteks Enthoo Primo Full Tower Case to watercool my gpu and cpu. Look at some of the video reviews on youtube for this case. You can't beat it at this price. It's going to cost me to sort my system out but once it's done it's done. Any future upgrades will just need the correct block to fit.

Playing BF4 my GPU doesn't go over 65c and my CPU i7 2600k @ 4.6g 70c with Antec 920 Kuhler. If I'm going to get in to mining I want it under water as I'm expecting those temps to rise by around 10c in the summer.

I don't know what Mantle will bring when the BF4 version is released, but it will be a free boost.

If I was buying a GPU now I would probably still go AMD 290/x and add a second card later down the line when the prices drop down a bit. At least you can mine on it! I'd pay extra now for a non reference cooler. I'd say a minimum would be a 290x for 1440 display.

Hi Hammer, I have looked at that case, to cool the CPU and a 290x with watercooling its easily a £500 outlay on cooling hardware

I may pre-order one of these but its now its effectively £500 for a GPU and as mining continues the shortage gets worse and the prices go up.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... at=1752

1000W PSU's are out of stock until March currently and that's everywhere!

This was £530 last week, now it's £620

Give it a month or so guys, asics for mining will be here soon at which point it'll not be worth mining and people will be dumping hardware left right and center..

Madman045 I got an email off Scan today. Case + 1000w psu

The 780ti link says £560 : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... -129-GI

Myself I would go with the Asus 290x as it looks like it has a better cooler to me. That's out of the 3 cards you have listed.

That case is a good deal, however the new RM generation of Corsair PSU's are not getting good reviews at the moment, hence they are the only brand not being sold out

yes the Asus is really tempting, lets see what they are after pre-order come the end of the month

This is the PSU i really was after, trying to get a Platinum rated one

OK, would you buy this for £450 with little use?

What are you wanting the card for?

If your main game is BF4 & or mining I'd still go for the Asus card at an extra £50. Mantle should boost frame rates with BF4 as well.

If you want to use games that use Physix go for the 780ti. Why is the card been sold?

Normally cards that are on pre order will go up when they arrive in stock. Then they will be discounted a couple of weeks later on the this week only deals.
OcUK normally tend to have stock before any other retailer. You do tend to pay a price premium on new products though. Once other etailers get them then OcUK discount the price to be the cheapest.

I'm so glad I got my 7990 when i did :hb:

If buying now I'd pre order the Asus card.

pure gaming is what I want it for

I want to change my CPU cooler, it does a brilliant job, its just to big so i cannot use the top PCI-E slot and using it at the bottom means i cannot get to the pins for the connectors like the power button

I was thinking of the 290x and the Corsair H100 or H110 CPU cooler, keep my existing case and just get a new PSU

The 780 TI they are selling both as they say they overspent and don't need that much power, the cards are 3-4 weeks old

You'll have to read a few review sites and see how the 780ti & 290x compare with the games you play. The ASUS 290x does well in BF4 at 1440. I hope Mantle will give a frame boost as well when the BF4 version is launched. About 13 new titles say they will support Mantle so you will have to see if any of these are of interest to you.

Doesn't sound like a bad shout, should help keep the costs down as well.
