Dunno Trig, I would think there are loads of opensource ones out there to do it.

<a href="http://opensource.software.informer.com ... -splitter/" target="_blank">http://opensource.software.informer.com ... litter/</a>

Depends what wrapper and codec is used.

i have used windows live movie maker for this, also avs4u and nero vision xtra

Like nelly says, its all down to the codecs used to make the movie in the first place.

The windoze stuff does the simple things OK. and you don't need to read through a 3 stone manual to learn how to do anything, unlike some.

Serif MoviePlus X5 has everything and even handles HD. Its GUI is intuitive, making various features and effects quicker to achieve. This is important when you have a number of things on the boil and you need to see and feel it fitting into your project.

I've tried a couple of programs in the past but most are fussy and full of tat that a vid novice doesn't need (read: can understand). The windows one is more than fine. I've used it for chopping up the digi camcorder stuff from holidays and car trips.
